Job description

As part of our activities in Frankfurt am Main Germany, Syngenta is looking for a:

Group Climate and Nature Assessment Expert (f/m/d)

Role purpose:

The Climate and Nature Expert is responsible for assessing impacts of agriculture in terms of climate resilience, sustainable resource management and biodiversity preservation.

Responsibilities/main tasks:

  • Lead and oversee environmental assessments of farm operations, specializing in climate impact (emissions at farm level), water management, carbon sequestration.
  • Develop and implement strategies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, enhance carbon sequestration, and optimize water usage within farm activities.
  • Utilize mathematical tools, including the Cool Farm Tool and Roth-C model, to analyze and interpret data for accurate environmental assessments.
  • Employ advanced modeling techniques to analyze and predict the environmental impact of various agricultural practices with strong focus on carbon sequestration ensuring the reliability of outcomes.
  • Utilize sophisticated tools (i.e., AI) and software to conduct detailed life cycle assessments, focusing on resource efficiency, emissions, and overall environmental impact in farm operations. Guiding Syngenta business units towards the use of life cycle assessments to define sustainability benefits beyond carbon.
  • Benchmarking of agricultural practices, simulate environmental impact scenarios that can enable decision making on sustainable agriculture practices, implementation of Syngenta portfolio for carbon footprint reduction, water conservation and protection of biodiversity.
  • Co-develop and implement models and simulations for evaluation of impacts on nature (i.e., biodiversity) and conservation evidence.
  • Stay abreast of emerging trends, methodologies, and technologies in environmental sustainability, integrating relevant advancements into farm practices.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams (i.e., marketing, R&D) to align environmental sustainability goals with overall business objectives and support Syngenta business success.
  • Prepare detailed reports and presentations, conveying complex environmental and nature data in a clear and actionable manner.

Qualifications

Knowledge and experience expected:

  • PhD in environmental sciences, agronomy, or a related field.
  • 5+ years' experience in sustainability assessments within the agricultural sector, with a focus on climate, water, and biodiversity. Proven experience in the corporate world with global focus and supporting regional businesses.
  • Expertise in using tools such as Cool Farm Tool, Roth-C model and or Life Cycle Assessment for accurate and detailed environmental analysis at farm level.
  • Strong understanding of emissions generated in agricultural field, the impact of change of practices on those emission, as well as carbon sequestration and sustainable practice strategies (i.e., variable fertilizer application).
  • Excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teams.
  • Familiarity with relevant certifications and standards related to environmental sustainability assessments in agriculture.
  • Attention to quality and detail and solid analytical skills and pragmatic mindset
  • Ability to build trust, influence and manage key stakeholders at all levels of the organization
  • Continuous improvement mindset and ability to challenge status quo
  • Self-started with ability to work independently
  • Full proficiency in English, fluent in German
