 The overall purpose of the job is to act an HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) advisor / liaison for the various business units at the RTP site. Ensure compliance with federal, state and local HSE regulations and Syngenta policies and standards. Responsible for all assigned aspects of HSE program development, implementation and improvement. Lead HSE cultural development and maintenance with site leadership

This is an onsite work role in our Durham, NC location. 

Duties:

  • Contribute to the management of the site HSE program with defined primary or secondary responsibilities for each area.
  • Ensure site compliance with federal, state and local HSE regulations and Syngenta policies and standards in a complex site to include office, laboratory, facility maintenance and greenhouse operations.
  • Contribute to the site Emergency Management Team and manage the site HSE Integrated Contingency and Emergency Action Plan as required.
  • Manage the relationship with all HSE customers through effective communication of customer needs and leadership’s HSE expectations.
  • Lend knowledge in areas of focused expertise to help coordinate and risk assess projects impacting HSE, e.g., management of change, maintenance activities, and other initiatives.
  • Point of contact as needed with NA HSE Regional experts.
  • Compile and submit various regulatory reports as assigned including Tier II, Wastewater Report, Semi-Annual Air Permit, SERAM reporting.
  • Sense technology in order to transition RTP to modern means of communicating HSE related guidance and training for all associates and visitors.

Qualifications

Required:

  • A four-year technical degree.
  • Course work in biology, safety or environmental issues. 
  • Knowledge of or experience with HSE (Health, Safety, Environment) regulations, e.g. USDA, OSHA, NFPA, EPA.
  • Ability to interpret legislation as it applies to agri-business.
  • Ability to organize and conduct a site HSE audit, conduct risk analysis of HSE issues.
  • Ability to create and edit written HSE programs based that effectively communicate Syngenta HSE expectations.
  • A minimum of one year of HSE or regulatory auditing/management experience.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to carry 25 pounds for a short distance.
  • Must be able to walk long distances and stand on their feet for long periods of time.
  • Able to climb multiple flights of stairs.
  • Must be able to climb ladders and work at heights.
  • Must pass a medical clearance to wear a respirator.
  • Must pass a physical for a hazardous materials worker.
