The Tomato Breeding department of Syngenta seeks a motivated candidate for a full-time position of: Tomato Breeder (Germplasm Development Scientist)

 

Into Action

 

This position represents a development position for a Breeder (Germplasm Development Scientist) with the leadership and technical capacity to fulfill the Tomato breeding responsibilities. Even if we are looking for an experienced Breeder the position is open for beginners as well. 

The candidate should have the leadership and technical capacity to fulfill the Tomato breeding responsibilities in a maximum of 2 years.

This position develops a range of new Tomato varieties. The Breeder is responsible for designing and executing breeding and technology projects by means of research, resulting in improvements and innovations of Syngenta Tomato Portfolio within the framework of product profile specifications. The position is a part of the Tomato Development Team. The role requires the knowledge to interact with other members as pathologists, plant physiologists, statisticians, biometrician, and applied genetic experts.

As molecular marker technology grows in importance, this role requires an understanding the technology and use the most effective breeding methods (predictive breeding, genomic) that would take advantage of the latest technology tools to accelerate the progress of developing successful commercial varieties.

 

  • The Breeder will work together with a team of scientists to execute projects using project management.
  • Inside multidisciplinary team, the breeder will participate to pre-breeding activity
  • He will participate in company Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) initiatives
  • The position is located De Lier in Netherland.
  • The Breeder will report to the Germplasm Development Lead located to France.

 

The Challenge

 

  • Develop an innovative and commercially successful product portfolio of Tomato varieties for Active Green House markets.
  • Full collaboration and integrated work with another Breeder working on the same site on Tomato AGH too.
  • On the frame of the collaboration with the Trait Project Lead and the Applied Genetic lead, secure the relevant phenotyping and participate actively to the trait discovery.  Deploy them into breeding populations and product pipeline.
  • Planning and control breeding projects within budgetary investments according to program priorities defined in collaboration with marketing. 
  • Collaborate closely with internal Syngenta Tomato Breeding programs to maximize the exchange of ideas and the leveraging of germplasm and traits. 
  • Secure efficient facility/operational support for the successful implementation of projects.
  • Organize prototype testing in the market in collaboration with farm management and the Product Evaluation team.
  • Facilitate transfer of products to production & marketing department
  • Scouting new technologies/opportunities/germplasm
  • Create and assist in development of IP position (Patents)
  • Establish good relationships with operational departments

Qualifications

Your Profile 

  • MSc – Agriculture engineering in plant science (breeding) or  Ph.D in Plant Breeding
  • Good understanding of new product/process implementation in commercial environment
  • Knowledge in experimental design, statistics, molecular markers and database management.
  • (Basic) Knowledge in pathology, plant physiology and crop management
  • Fluent in English
  • Project and People Management skills.
  • The ability to work with multi-cultural, multi-functional and multi-regional teams.
  • Ability to work as part of a team (Team Spirit) but also independently (autonomy).
  • Ability to function within a matrix organization requiring the ability to make common sense decision in an environment of change and challenges
  • Good communicator within academic as well as business environment
  • Keen eye for innovations and persistence in developing the innovation into a commercial product having the potential to protect with a patent.
  • “Green fingers”: Capability to “read” the plants
  • Frequent intra-Europe and international travel
