Job description

The North America R&D Flowers team is currently seeking a Pathology Associate located in Gilroy, California.  This position is 100% onsite and does not support visa sponsorship now or in the future.

Role purpose

  • Support plant disease diagnosis using molecular biology tools, such as DNA, RNA, and protein extraction, PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, ELISA, and hybridization.
  • Perform the microbial identification through their taxonomy
  • Assist the development of protocols for new technologies and subsequently the delivery of innovations in strong collaboration with other R&D, Operation, Marketing, and Supply Chain team members.

Accountabilities

  • Perform molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA/protein extraction, PCR, ELISA) on plant, soil, and microbial samples
  • Execute and develop plant disease diagnosis protocols using various molecular tools
  • Collaborate with Breeding Team to evaluate new technologies for disease diagnosis
  • Maintain accurate records of diagnosis results in database systems
  • Work independently in the laboratory while collaborating with cross-functional teams
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, lab safety protocols, and chemical usage guidelines
  • Manage lab inventory, equipment maintenance, and supply procurement
  • Maintain a clean and organized laboratory environment
  • Support disease trait development initiatives
  • Adapt to new challenges and learn emerging techniques as required

Qualifications

Critical knowledge

  • B.S. or MSc degree or equivalent in Biology or Agriculture
    • BS with 5+ years of experience, or
    • Masters with 3+ years of experience
  • Expertise in molecular biology techniques (DNA/RNA extraction, PCR, ELISA) and plant disease diagnosis
  • Knowledge of laboratory safety, regulatory compliance, and agricultural practices
  • Understanding of plant breeding concepts and crop quality improvement
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with protocol development experience
  • Excellent data management and record-keeping abilities, including database proficiency
  • Effective communication and teamwork skills for cross-functional collaboration
  • Detail-oriented with the ability to maintain a clean, organized laboratory environment
  • Adaptable and motivated to learn new techniques and technologies
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and relevant laboratory software

Preferred Qualifications

  • Knowledge of laboratory safety protocols and regulatory compliance (e.g., USDA-APHIS, CDFA)
  • Experience with lab equipment maintenance and calibration
