Job description

Purpose:

  • Manage and deliver indirect tax operations activities in line with applicable policies and procedures of the Country and Global Syngenta Standards (GSM);
  • Assure indirect tax accounting, reporting & audit / assessment certifications per respective regulatory requirement;
  • Assure compliance of GST payment, tax return and reporting obligations;
  • Optimize tax costs and facilitate risk mitigation;
  • Maintain highly compliant culture through continuous review and improvement of functional process and engagement with internal & external stakeholders.

Accountabilities:

  • Ensure:
  • GST Tax compliance – GSTR1, GSTR2 and GSTR 3B at multiple locations  
  • Timely filing of annual returns and attendance of revenue audits
  • Litigation management and controls
  • Tax accounting, reporting and litigation reporting
  • Support for local tax audits and litigations in VAT and Central Excise
  • System & process change management (policies, guidelines, instructions)
  • Contribute to business performance enhancement through effective Tax planning and strategies aligned to overall business strategies;
  • Support and facilitate external audits by tax and/or other authorities regarding indirect tax obligations and minimize risk exposure in terms of tax liabilities;
  • Coordinate 3rd party service providers (tax consultants / auditors etc.) and service delivery management including performance KPIs;
  • Support Group Tax projects with potential scope beyond India;
  • Take an active role in cashflow management (tax credit) and realizing tax assets;
  • Design and ensure existence of required supporting documentation for compliance purposes;
  • Effective engagement with key stakeholders including collaboration with Trade Affairs and P&S;
  • Prepare and conduct knowledge & training sessions including regulatory updates

Critical Success Factors & Key Challenges

  • Understanding the business and complexities of various business segments (CP, Seeds, and R&T) including benefit schemes availed under indirect tax legislation;
  • Completing ongoing tax assessments for various tax entities and completing appeal hearings;
  • Good networking with various stakeholders both within the organization including business and finance partners as well as externally (tax auditors and authorities, consultants);
  • Effectively balancing various tax and business priorities while ensuring indirect tax compliance across the organization;
  • Ability to quantify material adverse tax outcomes.

Knowledge & capabilities:

   Critical Knowledge -

  • Operational knowledge of SAP system desirable;
  • Hands on exposure of appearing before the GST revenue authorities and other tax authorities at the rank of assessing officer and appearing independently or in conjunction with consultants before such authorities;
  • Knowledge of GST, Excise, Customs, EXIM, Service Tax, VAT, FTP, FEMA regulations and compliance;
  • Exposure on appeal procedures including drafting / framing of grounds of appeals, drafting of responses, and working with external consultants;
  • Knowledge of standard operating procedures (SOPs), process flowcharts and risk matrixes;
  • Good communication skills (written/verbal)

  • Develop and maintain high level of Indirect tax compliance capability in the team and promote compliance culture through training and other relevant initiatives;

Qualifications

  • 6-10 years working experience in industry and or consultancy, thereof 3-4 years of relevant experience in a manager role;
  • Experience with multinational companies in the technical area of GST, Central Excise, EXIM, Service Tax, FTP regulations and compliance;
  • Relevant experience and/or qualification for competence in tax and/or statutory accounting and reporting;
  • Track record of compliance culture maintenance and enforcement. Good working knowledge of tax guidelines;
  • Good understanding of business end-to-end processes and internal controls necessary to safeguard the company’s assets;
  • Ability to effectively function in a complex multi-dimensional matrix organization;
  • Strong and effective communication in relation to key stakeholders, including senior managers at country, territory, region, and global levels.
  • Qualification i.e. CA / Finance MBA / Graduate in Commerce with Diploma in Indirect Taxation or EXIM preferred
