Main responsibilities:

  • Definition of a scientific data governance framework, including data cataloguing, data ownership, measurement, operational policies, risks, standards and compliance, across the data life cycle that aligns to the PS strategy and business needs whilst complying with relevant standards
  • Implementation of the defined scientific data governance framework across the global PS organisation ensuring that principles, policies, and controls are defined and integrated into operating processes and working practices
  • Management of organisational risk processes around data
  • Management of data quality and associated improvement activities to ensure that data quality is achieved for all Syngenta PS data 
  • Measurement of data maturity across the PS organisation, implementation of best practice and description of the benefits of potential improvements.
  • Proactive engagement with the community in PS to fully understand the breadth of science, the nature of the data and the challenges that exist. 
  • Advocating for better capture and management of data within the organisation by championing the organisational benefit of internal and external data and metadata standards, explaining the theory and standard methodology of data governance, how to apply these efficiently and effectively and the practical considerations.
  • Driving the evaluation and enrichment of data via various sources (both internal and external) with assessment and assurance that such data are provided and applied within contractual boundaries and performance agreements.
  • Management and governance of the PS data models, ensuring that all dependencies with other CP PR&D functions are managed effectively through collaboration.
  • Monitoring the internal and external landscape for new thinking and best practice in data management and data governance.

The role also has wider accountabilities for the development, ownership, and implementation of the Syngenta PS Data Vision and Strategy globally, the promotion and demonstration of the value of good data management and connected data across PS and R&D to the business, and the driving of data-driven upskilling and culture.


Qualifications

Experience required:

  • Demonstrable knowledge of the work practices and procedures relevant to the role which may include some formal qualification, broader industry awareness and practical experience (3 or more years in similar or related roles)
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with stakeholders from different functions and levels and translate business requirements into data governance strategies and plans.
  • Experienced in communicating why data and governance is important and developing strategies to create behavioural changes across an organisation, making sure that data are valued and handled as an asset, and the risks are well understood.
  • Excellent teamwork skills within scientific and technical teams
  • Experience in a Product Safety or life sciences technical area and/or experience related to operational and scientific processes, ways of working or analytics would be an advantage

Knowledge and education required: 

  • Formal training and/or qualification in a Data Management, science or related discipline (degree or equivalent may have MSc / PhD)
  • Change management skills with respect to planning, executing and sustaining data governance initiatives and transformations.
  • Management of data governance related projects and teams
  • Knowledge of data management and analysis tools such as SQL, Excel, Tableau, Qlik
  • Good understanding of data and information architecture – design and structure of data systems and platforms, conceptual and logical design of data models.
  • Understanding of internal and external data standards (vocabs, ontologies, models (e.g. SEND) in R&D
  • Continuous learning attitude - ability to keep up with the latest trends, technologies, and best practices in data governance and related fields.

Good to know:

  • Part of our Product Safety Strategic Development team you will report to the Head of Digital Strategy & Transformation.
  • Based at our International Research & Development site, Jealott’s Hill site, in Bracknell.
  • Hybrid working is possible with 3 days a week in the office.
  • No direct reports.

The Opportunity:

As the Scientific Data Management and Governance Lead in Product Safety (PS), your primary responsibility is the development and implementation of scientific data governance policies and procedures to ensure the usefulness and value of PS scientific data to R&D.  

You will be accountable for identifying, agreeing and documenting Data Management, Quality and Information Governance requirements by working with business stakeholders in Product Safety (PS), Information Technology (IT) and Digital R&D.

You will assure that PS scientific data assets comply with the required standards for use in decision making, analysis, predictive modelling and regulatory submissions by promoting the role of governance, co-developing processes and SOPs and following data governance best practices.
