As part of our activities in Bad Salzuflen, Syngenta is looking for a:

Applied Quantitative Genetic Scientists (m/f/d) Corn Europe

Role purpose:

The Applied Quantitative Genetic Scientists supports the breeding pipeline with molecular predictive breeding and genetic/genomic studies to increase genetic gain and achieve commercial goals based on targeted product profiles.

In collaboration with Breeders, Product Positioning Scientists, Applied Genetic and Data Scientists, Analytics & Decision Science and Seed Research, she/he will implement innovative breeding strategies using most advanced genotyping, envirotyping and phenotyping technologies. She/he will also contribute to innovation and continuous breeding pipeline optimization with Breeders and Product Positioning Scientists.

This position will focus on a set of Market Segments across Europe.

Responsibilities/main tasks:

  • You support breeders from a given Market Segment Team with predictive and prescriptive breeding at every breeding stage and run genetic study required to reach the Market Segment target objectives
  • You support the design, development, implementation, and execution of technical projects and new breeding and analytical methodologies to accelerate genetic gain. In conjunction with analytics and data science team, you develop new analytical methods for quantitatively measuring, prescribing, and characterizing functional genetic diversity at key points of the breeding pipeline
  • You work in diverse, cross-collaborative, and agile teams with plant breeders, applied genetic and data scientists, computational biologists, and IT on Regional (Europe) and Global (Worldwide) levels and with external collaborators
  • You consistently document and communicate results of research on data mining, analysis, and modelling approaches to ensure strategic forward planning, alignment within and across teams and agile implementation of the innovations

Qualifications

Knowledge and experience expected:

  • Ph.D. degree in quantitative genetics, or Master/Engineer degree in plant breeding with extensive experience in either a commercial or academic Plant Breeding setting.
    Experience in corn being a plus
  • Experience working with molecular marker-based studies applied to breeding, such as genome-wide phenotype-to-genotype association, genomic selection, and genetic diversity analysis
  • Successful quantitative genetics and genomic selection implementation in breeding programs
  • Demonstrated experience in data science for qualitative and quantitative variables using most advanced algorithms. Strong coding skills of end-to-end reproductible pipeline in R and/or Python with some experience in visualization tools/applications Rshiny
  • Project management experience in an AGILE team-oriented atmosphere. Ability to develop, plan and adhere to a budget
  • Experience in operating independently in a complex matrix environment. Strong growth mindset and willingness to learn. Result oriented and customer focused
  • Well-developed private and academic scientific network
  • Fluent in English mandatory. Intermediate German and/or French level is desirable
  • This position requires limited business trips in Europe (up to 5% for field visits and workshops), and occasionally Worldwide
