Internship: “Data scientist for Tomato
Harvesting Robot project”

Into action

Automation is key to enable high-throughput phenotyping to feed the increasing population. At Syngenta, we test and implement leading edge technologies to achieve this ambition. In this role as an intern, you own and drive the data analysis of the automation and high-throughput phenotyping initiative in Tomato Vision in De Lier/Maasland, which is at the technology forefront of greenhouses. Here, Syngenta and a robotic company have a robot deployed to enable the future of harvesting. You will work in an interdisciplinary, international team with members from breeding, automation & engineering, phenotyping/plant physiology and technology facility management. Combination with an academic thesis possible.

Main tasks:

  • Integrate multiple data sources, clean the data, perform data analysis, visualize the data, define standard KPI analysis tool.
  • Build the E2E data pipeline for script based routine analysis and use those insights for data collection improvements and/or adaptations to the robot.
  • Plan, oversee and perform (ground truth) data collection together with the local data collection team.
  • Optimize the phenotyping & ground truth concept, identify parameters/traits for comparison.
  • Develop the required adaptions together with the vendors and validate the upgraded solution.
  • Define a routine concept for the data use from the robot for breeding purposes and advancement decisions.
  • Support to define an E2E operation concept of the robot
  • Support the interdisciplinary project team.
  • Interaction-point with the vendors locally and remote to enable E2E data pipeline.
  • Local representative of the project team at Tomato Vision (De Lier).

Qualifications

Your profile

To succeed in this position, you are actively studying data/computer science, biosystems engineering, robotics or other technical field (Bachelor or Master). You are interested in new technologies like drones/robots, and you are able to handle integration and have a passion for data, including the analysis of huge data sets. You have excellent communication skills (incl. English), you are creative, you work independently, you think ahead and have passion to explore something new – please send your application to the contact details below!
