Job description

Through leading innovations, we help farmers around the world meet the challenge of feeding a growing population and taking care of our planet. To support that challenge, Syngenta’s Seeds Traits R&D team is currently seeking a Senior Scientist in Trait Technologies in Durham, NC.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in molecular genetic technologies and plant developmental biology who is motivated to improve global agriculture through the application of modern genome modification technologies.

Accountabilities:

  • Work on a diverse mix of innovative projects, focusing on transformation technologies, precision genome engineering, genome editing including Hi-Edit technologies, breeding innovations, seed hybridization systems, and high throughput capabilities.
  • Help ensure the adoption of novel breeding innovations to accelerate GM and GE product development.
  • Provide leadership in generating innovative ideas, developing novel capabilities and collaborating across functions to accelerate GM & GE trait delivery to the market in major crops such as maize and soybean.
  • Help invent new technologies, file patents and publish manuscripts.
  • Plan and execute experiments independently or collaboratively, interpret, and present results, maintain accurate experimental records according to company policies with outstanding attention to detail, and share results with team members and other stakeholders.
  • Contribute new ideas, propose new projects, and manage laboratory activities of others, and to make discoveries, file patents and publish manuscripts.
  • Propose, design and carry out experiments to invent and develop new enabling technologies to support Syngenta Traits R&D goals.

Qualifications

Required:

  • Ph.D degree in Biology, Plant Biology, Plant Genetics, and/or Plant Biotechnology or Masters degree with a minimum of 7 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of plant molecular biology, genetics, biochemistry, molecular biology and/or cell biology.
  • Knowledge of plant genetics, genomics and crop breeding.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of biotechnology including recombinant DNA technology and transgene expression regulation.
  • Knowledge of modern laboratory techniques, general computational tools in molecular biology and genomics.
  • Knowledge and experience in plant physiology, genetics, genomics, gene editing, developmental biology and agricultural biotechnology.
  • Competence in molecular biology for transgene manipulation, genetics, cell biology, and genome editing.
  • Ability to utilize bioinformatics tools for comparative genomics and sequence analysis, standard data processing and analysis software.
  • Ability to conceive, design and carry out innovative experiments through independent, creative thinking and careful, step-by-step vetting of new ideas and establishment of new techniques.
  • Ability to interpret genetic and omics information and large data sets.
  • Experience with computational tools and databases.
