Role Purpose:

  • To carry out complex programmes of work to identify and understand the mode of action of novel fungicides
  • Understand and interpret mode of action information, providing guidance on its implications for fungicide research
  • Measure intrinsic potency against the fungal target protein and selectivity between fungal and non-target species. Maximise the use of automation to deliver data to project teams

Accountabilities:

  • Independently carry out complex programmes of work to demonstrate and understand the mode of action of fungicides
  • Design, implement and carry out a range of proteomic, enzyme and cell-based assays. Critically review and interpret different data to develop high quality hypotheses on the mode of action of fungicides
  • Meet project timelines for availability of data and use automation to ensure effective and efficient delivery of high-quality data. Understand how this intrinsic potency correlates with biological efficacy
  • Use knowledge of potency, selectivity, and mode of action to provide guidance to projects
  • Maintain compliance with Syngenta HSE principles and standards including standards of ethical behaviour.
  • Work flexibly to support different projects and other team members across the function.

Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities:

 

Key knowledge

  • A PhD or equivalent industry experience in biochemistry, biomedical science, biological sciences, chemical biology or closely related field with strong background of independent research with particular emphasis on protein biochemistry and proteomics.
  • Lab based experience in design, optimisation and running biochemical assays.
  • Background in proteomics sample preparation, membrane protein, protein purification, operation of LC-MS instruments would be plus
  • Demonstrated ability to research and lead development in new areas of biochemistry
  • Knowledge of agrochemically relevant modes of action

 

Key experience

  • Practical experience of working independently in a laboratory studying the effect of small molecule inhibitors using proteomics or enzymology.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop new skills and techniques to address specific project requirements.
  • A good understanding of ligand-binding or enzyme inhibition assay.
  • Work both independently and as part of a team. Flexibility to work collaboratively and support activities across functions.
  • Communicate complex data sets professionally and effectively to influence key stakeholders.

  • Accurate data recording and impeccable attention to details.
  • Well organised and capability to manage a variety of projects ranging in complexity with different deadlines.
