Job description

 To lead and execute the Foundation and Stock Seed Recovery Program, focusing on restoring and maintaining genetic integrity of parent lines for hybrid flower varieties, with initial emphasis on Zinnia elegans. This role will establish robust protocols for foundation seed management, implement systematic parent line restoration, and ensure long-term sustainability of genetic resources.

Duties:

  • Evaluate and assess hybrid and parent line performance to determine genetic integrity.
  • Develop and implement comprehensive restoration strategies for compromised parent lines.
  • Establish standardized protocols for Foundation and Stock seed management.
  • Lead the cleanup and development of foundation seed for Magellan, Uproar, and Zowie varieties.
  • Design and oversee quality control measures including variability profiling and cull frequency assessments.
  • Train production teams on proper foundation and stock seed handling procedures.
  • Optimize generation advancement strategies to maintain genetic purity.
  • Analyze and recommend cost-effective approaches for hybrid production.
  • Create documentation systems for tracking genetic resources and seed lots.
  • Identify and prioritize additional varieties requiring parent line restoration.
  • Collaborate with breeding and production teams to ensure seamless implementation of recovery programs.

Qualifications

Education:

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Plant Breeding, Plant Genetics, Seed Science, or related field required.
  • Additional coursework in Plant Pathology, Statistical Analysis, and Population Genetics preferred.

Experience:

  • Minimum 8-10 years of relevant experience in:
  • Seed production and foundation seed management.
  • Plant breeding or genetics research.
  • Quality control systems in seed industry.
  • Parent line maintenance and genetic purity preservation.
  • Leading technical projects and programs.

Additional Information

Salary for this role is $78,400 - $117,600 per year.
