Job description

To support this mission, Syngenta’s  Germplasm Development Team is seeking a Pepper Breeder in Culiacán, Sinaloa, Mexico. This role will help deliver a market-leading commercial pipeline of hybrid pepper varieties for targeted markets in Mexico by leading line development, hybrid creation, early-stage trialing, and product advancement.

Implement Syngenta's global strategy for new breeding technologies, molecular breeding techniques, and variety performance prediction methods. Collaborate closely with Breeding Operations, Trialing & Product Placement, Marketing & Sales teams, and growers to develop successful products and deep market knowledge.

Accountabilities:

  • Develop and maintain a product development portfolio aligned with market segment needs and business planning.
  • Perform all tasks in compliance with company safety and stewardship policies.
  • Communicate program status, issues, and risks regularly with peers and supervisors to ensure objectives and business goals are met.
  • Develop awareness of market needs across Mexico segments and collaborate with Breeding Trial Specialist (BTS) and Product Development Specialist (PDS) colleagues to identify performance gaps and develop research plans to address them.
  • Build deep knowledge of program-relevant germplasm and Syngenta's global germplasm resources, and facilitate germplasm exchange across breeding programs in accordance with global strategy.
  • Develop expertise in crop biology, germplasm management, and trait priorities to contribute to crop strategy and product profile development with market segment and marketing teams.
  • Implement data science tools and predictive models for product development, and plan nurseries and yield trial experiments.
  • Provide input on hybrid advancement decisions, working with market segment teams to apply appropriate selection criteria and target product profiles (TPP).
  • Conduct quantitative assessments of pipeline performance aligned with market needs and generate reports to communicate product performance data to stakeholders and management.
  • Participate in trait discovery projects, collaborating with Trait Development Leads and Genetic Scientists to identify marker-trait associations and lead commercial deployment of innovative traits.
  • Collect data and field notes on agronomic traits in inbred and hybrid nurseries.
  • Work collaboratively within Syngenta Vegetable Seeds organization, partnering closely with Market Segment, Product Development, and Sales/Marketing teams to achieve customer-focused results.
  • Ability and willingness to travel internationally in Mexico, U.S., and Latin America.
  • Physical ability to work in challenging environmental conditions (hot, cold, humid).
  • Flexible and agile attitude with ability to thrive in a dynamic environment and adapt to new situations.
  • Strong communication skills, ability to drive results within a team, and influence others effectively.

Qualifications

Requirements

  • PhD or M.Sc. with 6+ years’ experience managing a successful breeding program.
  • Experience in and a passion for applied plant breeding.
  • Knowledge of genetics, statistics, phytopathology, plant physiology, molecular markers, and experience with their application in a commercial breeding program.
  • Proven success with product development projects in breeding.
