Syngenta is seeking an Environmental Fate and Exposure Modeler to assess the environmental fate of our active ingredients and model exposure to support labeled use patterns and provide input to regulatory risk assessments. This includes developing the science strategy to meet the techno-regulatory requirements to build and ensure best in class submission packages to support the maintenance, re-registration, and development of crop protection products for Syngenta in Canada and United States. The primary responsibilities of this position are to:

  • Provide technical inputs into the environmental fate exposure strategy for the development and registration of new active ingredients/products and maintenance of registered active ingredients/products within North America.
  • Conduct screening level ecological and drinking water exposure for US EPA, and Canada PMRA using regulatory aquatic exposure models to make exposure predictions in surface and groundwater used to support new and existing registrations of Syngenta products for registration and re-registration risk assessments.
  • Provide strategic and exposure modelling support for endangered species risk assessments of pesticide active ingredients.
  • Work closely with regulatory (regional and global), product safety and other functional teams to contribute to risk assessments for regulatory submissions and to develop and optimize scientific capabilities.
  • Support water issues management and projects involving off-target movement (i.e., runoff, drift, and flux).
  • Participate in the development of methodologies, data, and studies specific to Syngenta products.

In addition, the individual will have opportunities to interact with regulatory authorities and develop professionally/advance career via technical and leadership pathways, represent Syngenta via professional organizations/workshops and industry-wide task forces and publish/present research.


Qualifications

  • Master of Science with at least 5 years or Ph.D. with at least 3 years of experience in a field related to environmental science, soil science, soil physics, environmental or agricultural engineering, environmental chemistry, risk assessments.
  • Knowledge of and/or experience in the following areas: environmental fate modelling for FIFRA, statistical procedures used in environmental sciences, programming, and regulatory models used in environmental risk assessments including regulatory models used by the US EPA, and Canada PMRA such as: PWC, SWCC, PRZM, VVWM, PRZM-GW, PFAM, PEARL, PELMO, FOCUS-PRZM, and TOXSWA to make exposure predictions in surface and groundwater.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills with experience preparing and presenting technical information.
  • Ability to plan, organize, adapt, and develop technical skills in disciplines beyond core area of expertise.
  • Ability to interact and effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to work autonomously while delivering business priorities and ensuring project timelines are met, with the flexibility to transition as needs change.
  • Aptitude to synthesize regulatory policies and risk assessment to develop and execute strategies relevant for Syngenta product registration           .

Desired Experience and Background

  • Ph.D. or Masters in a field related to environmental science
  • Experience with and understanding of the environmental fate inputs of FIFRA-related Risk Assessments and Endangered Species Assessments
  • Experience with off-target movement, including drift (AgDRIFT and AgDISP) and field flux modeling
  • Experience in model development, programming, mathematical modelling interpretation of model output
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve complex technical challenges and develop innovative approaches to solving problems
  • Ability to provide leadership in a cross-disciplinary team
  • Background and understanding of the Agrochemical Industry
  • Previous involvement working with Regulatory Agencies
