Through leading innovations, we help farmers around the world meet the challenge of feeding a growing population and taking care of our planet. We are currently seeking an Entomology Scientist for the Insect and Herbicide Trait Discovery Team in Durham, North Carolina (Research Triangle Park site).
Role Purpose
The purpose of the Entomology Scientist is to conduct activities for insectary management and improve methods and processes to effectively provide insect colonies for Seeds trait research and development projects.
Accountabilities

  • Design and execute experiments in a defined functional program area involving a wide variety of problems in the lab, insectary, and greenhouse
  • Performs standard and non-standard assignments for insectary management activities including insect diet preparation, insect egg hatching, rearing, infestation, pupal collection, and mate insect strains
  • Be an expert source of information in a defined disciplines with capability of literature search, interpret and present result
  • Provide support for insect bioassay activities and assay development
  • Develop in depth skills through vocational training and work experience in a distinct area and range of processes, procedures and systems to carry out assigned tasks
  • Mainly works autonomously to complete work with a limited degree of supervision
  • Often solves complex and varied problems of recurring nature with a limited degree of supervision
  • Seek for creative and innovative solutions to improve methods and processes
  • Guides and supports junior team members, may assist in their formal orientation and training
  • Performing all tasks in a manner compliant with and in support of all HSE safety and stewardship guidelines related company policies and practices
  • Effectively communicating regularly with peers and supervisors regarding the status of projects and work activities
  • Contribute to a congenial group environment, fostering scientific rigor, safety, and inclusion

Qualifications

  • B.S. Degree in an agricultural/biology related discipline with 2-5 years’ experience (or MS degree) in an industrial/academic laboratory setting. Candidates with relevant insect biology experience are preferred. Candidates without relevant insect experience may be considered.
  • Knowledge surrounding the practices and procedures that impact insect rearing precision and accuracy.
  • Knowledge in insect biology and genetics principles.
  • Experience in insect bioassays set up and method improvement
  • Ability to learn, use and support proprietary IT systems.
  • Must be able to work independently and effectively communicate challenges to the team.
  • Must be detail oriented, with an attention to accuracy.
  • Good understanding of working in project team
  • Ability and motivation to learn and adapt new technologies
  • Creative thinker to solve problems

Preferred Requirements

  • Knowledge and experience of entomology techniques and genetics is desirable.
  • Advanced skills to use MS Office, especially Word, Excel, Power Point and other standard office software.
  • Knowledge and experience around insectary management and insect bioassay is desirable.
  • Knowledge of plant care practices is desirable
