The Seeds Development / Vegetables department for Syngenta seeks a passionate candidate for a full-time position of: 

 

Breeder Brassica

And are you ready to lead our Global Breeding program focusing on grower traits and disease resistance for Brassica? We are thrilled to invite you to join our passionate and experienced Brassica breeding team.

 

The challenge 

As our breeder for Brassica, you will be mainly focusing on the development of inbred lines and hybrid varieties for targeted markets. But what can you expect in terms of responsibilities? 

  • You’re in charge! You will lead the breeding program in all its facets. This includes nurseries, hybrid testing and all other breeding program related activities.
  • You will have a focus on the development of commercially successful hybrids. Besides you will ensure that all activities act to drive genetic gain and the long-term success of the breeding program.
  • Developing and Implementing breeding strategies will be part of your job. Besides breeding strategies, you will be implementing molecular marker breeding techniques and prediction methods for population and hybrid performance to optimize the breeding program.
  • But there is more: as our breeder you will maintain and develop a product development portfolio in line with market segment requests and our business planning. Part of this will be to address the short-, medium-, and long-term market segment needs.
  • Stakeholder management is key. Therefore, you communicate effectively and regularly with peers and supervisors regarding the status of projects and work activities, as you are up to date about all the statuses. Besides you develop awareness of market needs for commercial products throughout all primary market areas and are you able to translate those into breeding targets.
  • Finally, you will develop an expertise in crop biology, germplasm management and critical trait priorities. You will keep learning in this job every day.

Qualifications

Your profile 

  • To succeed in this position, you have at least BSc degree with 5 years of experience in a similar role, or you have a MS degree / PhD in for example Plant Breeding, Plant Physiology, Plant Science.
  • You bring knowledge about and experience in conventional plant breeding techniques, germplasm management, diversity analysis, experimental design, quantitative genetics, and statistical analysis including prediction theory. Ideally you have a good understanding of the fundamentals of genome wide (GW) and marker assisted breeding approaches as well.
  • As we are an international and divers company, we ask you to have good communication skills in English and preferable at least a basic command of Dutch. Do you speak fluently English and does your Dutch need some improvement? Don’t worry, we can work on that! 
  • Being a team player is important, but we really appreciate if you can work independently as well. In this role you will have best of both worlds.
