As part of our activities in Bad Salzuflen Germany, Syngenta is looking for a:

Wheat Breeder / Hybrid Wheat Breeder (f/m/d)

Role purpose:

The Wheat Breeder / Hybrid Wheat Breeder leads Syngentas continental winter wheat hybrid breeding program to develop profitable cultivars and parental lines for EAME markets. This role manages trial networks, creates product profiles, ensures seed quality compliance, and provides technical expertise to drive commercial success through innovative hybrid wheat varieties.

Responsibilities/main tasks:

  • Design crosses to be accelerated through CMS backcrossing, SSD and DH processes, before exploring potentional of new germplasm through experimentation and trialing
  • In collaboration with other cereal pipeline leads, continue to advance and develope hybrid wheat breeding strategies using all available technoligies and resoucres
  • Leverage internal as well as external R & D capabilities to update the existing breeding program and strategy to the newest and most efficient technical innovations
  • Develop formal links with other EAME wheat breeding programs, to fish new genetic variability as a source of new traits or parents
  • Exchange elite germplasm with other EAME hybrid wheat breeding programs, in particular Early (TW) and legacy OW
  • Develop and update growth plans for Late program hybrid wheat breeding including internal & external interfaces, resourcing needs, key capabilities, expected deliverables
  • Ensure smooth communication of all relevant data to product development and production and supply functions for efficient wheat promotion processes, provide expertise for optimal agronomic support to enable new hybrid performance
  • Manage program resources with best possible efficiency to deliver objectives
  • Gain approvals for the plan and ensure effective implementation by appropriate hiring and investment actions

Qualifications

Knowledge and experience expected:

  • PhD in plant breeding and genetics
  • At least 5 to 10 years of work experience as a breeding research scientist in reputed agricultural university or private organization. Can be wheat/barley or any conventional/hybrid crop. Multi-zonal university / private organizations experience is preferred
  • Strong understanding of farmer needs in continental cultivation zones
  • Proven track record of selection and release of varieties which have had commercial success, in wheat or other crops
  • Extensive knowledge and experience of using modern breeding technologies and strategies (DH, markers, hybrid systems, Genomic Selection)
  • Experience of presenting own research publishing research papers
  • Extensive knowledge of existing cereal varieties
  • Proficient communication skills in written and spoken English and German (French is a plus)
  • Excellent communication skills, for both internal stakeholder management and discussions with external partners
  • Experience with Syngenta tools and Wow a strong plus
