To support that challenge, the Sweet Corn R&D Fresh Market team is currently seeking a Research and Development Intern in Nampa, ID. As an intern you will have the opportunity to work in a sweet corn plant breeding program, assisting in designing experiments, planting, participating in field and lab preparations, collecting data, and noting field observations, and analyzing data related to a selected breeding project of interest. Through this internship you will be exposed to research activities, provided the opportunity to apply your academic background and ultimately be exposed to an active vegetable breeding program RD Vegetables at Syngenta

Estimated Duration: May 2023-August 2023 

You will: 

• Support plant breeding scientists in both field related activities and analytical activities required for maintaining an active hybrid sweet corn breeding program 
• Perform activities related to planting, note taking throughout plant life cycle, thinning and rouging, sweet corn eating stage assessments, and safety & training 
• Assist with managing and developing part time workers 
• Analyze data and prepare a report and presentation for an assigned project focusing on applying innovative methodology and technology improvements to the sweet corn breeding program 
• Make sure all activities are developed according to the Company safety procedures and recommendations, and promote environmentally sustainable solutions 

What you must have: 

• A High School Diploma or equivalent 
• Enrollment in a Bachelor’s or advanced degree program in Agronomy, Biology, Ag Business, or another closely related field of study 
• A valid driver’s license

• Communication-The ability to communicate information well (both written and spoken) is highly desired 
• Detail Oriented-All procedures and policies must be understood and followed 
• Autonomous-An independent individual who is self-motivating and needs little supervision 
• Familiarity with working on a farm, working with crops, or working outdoors is preferred but not required 
• Confidence- Not afraid to ask bold questions and be curious 
• Eagerness to learn and grow in the role 
• Excellent computer skills including proficiencies in both Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Word 
• Innovative - To always look to implement new procedures or technologies to improve work efficiencies 
• Detail/Accuracy Oriented - All procedures and policies must be understood and followed 
• Ability to perform basic math functions
