Role purpose:

  • Leads research programs and projects which annually ensures business benefit. Aligned with the flower business needs (Retail, marketing, seeds production, young plants and seed enhancement).
  • Collaborate closely with retail, marketing, seeds production, young plants and seed enhancement in research programs to generate new crop culture information, growing protocols, innovations, and to validate product claims.
  • Provides scientific leadership in strategically important science and technology areas.   Delivers expert advice to create and implement research/development programs and procedures to ensure a business benefit.
  • Supports an innovation culture within local teams and throughout the flowers organization.

Accountabilities

  • Responsible for leading a regional research portfolio in own science area and support global and regional projects aligned with business needs. Agree project definition and targets with stakeholders, shape experimental programs and define appropriate resources and skills.
  • Provides scientific leadership and excellence for Syngenta via maintenance of a high level of scientific expertise and credibility both local and external research organizations.
  • Secures high scientific standards and analytical capabilities, including experimental design, reporting, standardized metrics and upscaling or implementing processes.
  • Communicates technical trials and evaluation results effectively throughout the organization to enable key business decisions and training to key users and sponsors the upscaling and implementation of research output in field of expertise.
  • Actively engage with R&D, operations, farms, sales and marketing to leverage insights and learnings across the organization production. Lead Technical Innovation team and advise other colleagues on scientific principles and methods.
  • Be an active member of the scientific community by networking (e.g., research institutes, universities, scientific societies and Interest Groups / Lobby Associations), participating in scientific conferences, and reviewing scientific literature.
  • Support annual budget projections and leading or providing input to drive business case requirements for research programs and projects.

HSE

  • Ensure compliance with HSE policy and objectives, creating a suitable culture of leadership through example, providing and enforcing directions to the assigned team.
  • Evaluate risks and controls in assigned work area, actively participating in audit and inspections program, receiving training and training assigned team according to the needs identified in management system.
  • Develop and review procedures related to HSE management in assigned area.
  • Ensure all incidents to be reported, investigated and corrected by necessary actions. Relevant learning lessons to be shared with interested collaborators.

QUALITY

  • Responsible of quality management, responsible of ensure quality policy and standards in Guatemala, using resources provided for compliance and proposing improvement plans that need to be aligned to local legislation.
  • Responsible of implementing controls for good management and resources usage. Also responsible for creating a culture of quality and continuous improvement through leadership, having to review the performance of quality management in areas under his charge and report results to management.
  • Must support audits scheduled for the site and is responsible to execute and monitor the improvement plan derived from them.

Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities

  • Master in horticulture, agriculture, biology, plant physiology or similar.
  • At least 5 years’ experience in a horticulture research environment.
  • Experience in experimental design, interpretation, and projects reporting.
  • Experience in technical communication to diverse audiences (scientific journals, trade magazines or training manuals, etc.)
  • Working experience in greenhouse operations, live-good production, and horticultural sciences.
  • Must be able to understand both R&D and commercial grower processes.
  • Good communication & presentation skills (oral, written) with all levels of management, internal team, and internationally.
  • Solid IT skills (Microsoft and stadistic packages)
  • Fluent in English
