At Syngenta, the start of the new active ingredient invention process involves biology screening at scale.  We test thousands of samples on a range of weed, insect and disease focused biology assays and the data generated is used to select areas for further investigation.  This area of work is called Lead Generation, and as biologists we play a key role in data generation and decision making.  We have an opportunity in the Discovery Biology group, for a weed control focused Senior Research Scientist.  We are looking for a self-motivated biologist with an interest or experience in agriculture or plant science with an aptitude for practical problem solving and data handling that can play a key role in our support of Lead Generation activities.  The successful candidate will have the opportunity tol gain knowledge of high throughput screening methods, gain expertise the digital systems that underpin the data acquisition process and importantly join our Weed Control Lead Generation team and contribute by retrieving, analysing and interpreting datasets.  The role also provides the opportunity to work with experts from CPR Biology and other science functions. Headlines of the role are listed below:

  • Work as part of a team to deliver high-quality, timely data to support projects and the discovery of new herbicide lead areas.
  • Use technical expertise to provide interpretations and recommendations
  • Support Discovery Biology’s screening platform through the continuous improvement of existing methods and running of bespoke tests to expand and enhance the screening capabilities.
  • Provide operational and analytical support to the Discovery Biology group and Lead Generation teams

 


Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities

  • Technically trained to Degree or MSc level in a Biology/Agronomy subject or equivalent experience.
  • Practical knowledge of laboratory working practices and confident following and developing scientific protocols.
  • Understanding of global agriculture and current crop protection measures
  • Experience of working within teams
  • Experience of complex data manipulation, analysis, and presentation
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Aptitude and enthusiasm to engage with new technology and digital projects
  • Innovative and creative mindset
  • Ability to train & upskill colleagues and be able to clearly communicate new concepts and processes
  • Self-motivated to deliver work slate and continually develop knowledge and experience
  • Continuous improvement mindset

Jealott's Hill International Research Centre is situated in pleasant semi-rural surroundings between Bracknell and Maidenhead and is the place of work for approximately 800 Syngenta scientists and support staff. Jealott’s Hill is one of the main global research and development sites and key activities include discovery and research of novel chemical active ingredients, biocontrol products, formulation technologies, with related product safety and technical support of our product range and seeds research.
