About the role:

Do you have a PhD/Masters/Bachelors in Biology, Bioscience, Biotechnology, or bioprocess related discipline and equivalent lab experience?

Do you also have knowledge and experience of purification and characterisation of diverse protein targets and practical experience of a range of chromatography techniques?

This is a fantastic opportunity to join our dynamic, collaborative and industrious protein production team working on developing and executing production process capable of delivering multi gram quantities of the required protein(s)

Role profile and expectations:

  • Work as part of a protein production team providing gram quantities of purified recombinant protein to support Syngenta’s novel trait research and development projects
  • Carry out Downstream Processing method development and optimisation for purifying different recombinant proteins from E.coli and other microbes ensuring final outputs meet defined specifications and deadlines
  • Make recommendation for protein purification and characterisation methodologies based upon experimental results and communicate results to the project team
  • Implementation of automated screening platforms to support development work for the production process at scale
  • Accurately record results to agreed company standards
  • Prepare technical reports, present findings within project groups and be an active communicator within the wider Syngenta scientific community
  • Work safely and with due care to others ensuring compliance with company HSE policies

Qualifications

Essential education & experience:

  • PhD (or Msc/BSc + equivalent lab experience) in Biology, Bioscience, Biotechnology, or bioprocess related discipline
  • Demonstrable knowledge and experience of purification and characterisation of diverse protein targets
  • Practical experience of a range of chromatography techniques including affinity, ion exchange (IEX), hydrophobic interaction (HIC) and size exclusion (SEC) chromatography
  • Strong evidence of troubleshooting and  innovative problem solving
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Good communication and planning skills

Desirable experience:

  • Experience of using and applying DoE for method validation
  • Experience with data management tools (e.g. Benchling) and data analysis software (e.g. JMP)
  • Understanding of Upstream Processes (USP) to support development of recombinant protein expression in microbial systems
  • Experience of working with scalable bioprocess technologies e.g. TFF, Hollow fibre
  • Experience of working with Ambr250 microscale fermentation system
  • Experience of automated high-throughput screening of protein expression and purification using e.g. Tecan workflows
  • Experience of working with a continuous improvement (CI) mindset to bring new innovations to evolve lab ways of working (WoW)

Jealott's Hill International Research Centre is situated in pleasant semi-rural surroundings between Bracknell and Maidenhead and is the place of work for approximately 800 Syngenta scientists and support staff. Jealott’s Hill is one of the main global research and development sites and key activities include discovery and research of novel chemical active ingredients, biocontrol products, formulation technologies, with related product safety and technical support of our product range and seeds research.
