To support that challenge, the Plant Analysis Group at Syngenta is seeking a scientist that will provide support for expanding our plant molecular analysis platform and all related activities, including (but not limited to) day-to-day delivery, state-of-the-art molecular analysis, optimization of NGS protocols, process optimization and performing lab operations located in Durham, NC based onsite at our Research Triangle Park Innovation Center.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Perform day-to-day lab delivery, including (but not limited to) tissue collection and preparation, DNA & RNA extraction, NGS library preparation, PCR-based platform (qPCR), and sequencing of libraries on in-house sequencing equipment
  • Support the implementation of high-throughput lab protocols
  • Initiate, lead, and carry out continuous improvement across all aspects of the platform to enhance capacity, efficiency, and cost reduction.
  • Evaluate new methods and technologies to enable the expansion of next generation sequencing (NGS) platforms for higher throughput, high-quality, and low-cost applications.
  • Support testing of novel methods involving NGS as well as PCR-based approaches.
  • Management/maintenance of sequencing and related lab equipment.
  • Provide clear communication of work and results with supervisor and team
  • Provide appropriate documentation for day-to-day work.
  • Perform all activities in accordance with the Syngenta Health, Safety, Environmental Policy and Quality Management/Stewardship guidelines

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor of science degree with 2+ years of professional experience, in Molecular Biology, Plant Biochemistry, or related field, preferably in the high throughput platforms.
  • An understanding of NGS fundamentals and applications, critical factors influencing data quality, and an ability to troubleshoot the sequencing process end to end
  • Techniques in molecular biology including DNA extraction and purification, PCR and qPCR, DNA library preparation, etc.
  • A fast learner with self-motivation

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Traits & Abilities:

  • 2+ years of hands-on experience working with high throughput lab platforms. The ideal candidate would also have knowledge about other NGS platforms such as Illumina, PacBio, Nanopore etc.
  • Demonstrated expertise in molecular biology wet lab skills including DNA extraction and purification from diverse tissue samples, DNA library preparation, etc.
  • Experience with optimization of wet lab techniques to improve sequencing data quality, robustness, etc.
  • Experience translating methods from initial development to a routine pipeline
