Role purpose 

  • Execute laboratory and field operations to meet quality and timeline targets by assisting in all aspects of the DH corn production process.
  • Ensure that agreed quantities of Doubled Haploid (DH) plants are produced and delivered on time.
  • Plan and execute lab activities as per production plan with minimal supervision.
  • Identify challenges, deviations and develop improvement plans
  • Experiment data documentation, analysis and reporting to LM and stakeholders.
  • Improve existing Protocol and develop new protocol as per requirement.

 

Accountabilities

Operations

  • Manage the relevant operational aspects of the DH production process from receipt of donor seed to transfer of DH material to end users  
  • To understand and undertake, the full range of lab procedures required to produce corn DH to strict deadlines
  • Work with the DH Lead to liaise with key stakeholders and breeding leaders to ensure that annual production is scheduled according to agreed targets, timelines and priorities.  Understand stakeholder needs and communicate production expectations.
  • Ensure DH production tracking and data analysis files are managed and maintained appropriately
  •  Ensure equipment and work areas are maintained to a high level
  • Provide input for Consumables and supporting staff requirement for budget preparation.

People

  • Manage technicians working in  the lab .
  • Train personnel in various activities related to DH line production
  •  Ensure that personal development/career plans are constructed and supported. 

HSE and Quality

  • Identify HSE areas for improvement and ensure operational activities are within defined standards within the work areas. Identify corrective measures and ensure they are implemented
  • Ensure that quality principles are adhered to for all operational activities 

Continuous Improvements

  • Drive excellence in operations, emphasis on continuous improvement and productivity, sharing best practices, obtaining the agreed quality level, and measurement with effective KPIs
  • Contribute to the implementation of long term DH production plans. Work with the DH Lead to manage change effectively, both individually and within the team.  
  • Support the annual budgeting processes by providing input to DH Lead on projected spend, risks, challenges and opportunities
  • Flexible attitude and ability to learn new procedures

  • Understand and concern for HSE standards and quality of work as an individual and across the team.

Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities

Critical knowledge

  • Masters /Ph.D. degree or equivalent in agricultural or biological science
  • Understanding of DH technology and its integration into and value to plant breeding program

 

Critical experience

  • At least 5-8 years of work experience in Double Haploid/plant tissue culture/research related activities.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage large scale field, greenhouse, and laboratory activities.
  • Data collection and analysis.
  • Manage inventory of seed and coordinate seed shipments.
  • Working knowledge of plant tissue culture techniques and green house activities .
  • Demonstrated competence in the use of computer software for data management and analysis.
  •  Experience of working with Corn crop desirable
  • Experience of managing and delivering tissue culture laboratory operations essential
  • Experience of working with operational HSE processes essential
