Role Profile
Syngenta’s Seeds Product Safety group is committed to applying world-class science and winning innovation to offer farmers safe, cost-effective solutions that address the demands of a rapidly changing world.  We are looking for a regulatory scientist to join our Consumer and Environmental Safety Team.  

This is an entry level professional position with extensive career growth opportunities.  As a Technical Expert 2, you will primarily be responsible for understanding and interpreting the data requirements of human and animal safety assessments for our genetically modified (GM) or genome edited (GE) crop products. You will apply the principles and scientific methodologies of life sciences to conduct literature search and review, conduct bioinformatics analysis for protein allergen and toxin risks, and monitor the conduct of GLP studies for toxicity or whole food feeding in order to deliver reports in compliance with regulatory guidelines and GLP requirements in support of regulatory submissions.   

Accountabilities 

  • Demonstrate a good understanding of regulatory guidance and study requirements within human and animal safety assessment, protein allergenicity assessment in particular.
  • Conduct systematic literature reviews of databases and the internet for information including but not limited to target gene(s) and their gene products, mode of action, impact on metabolic pathways, history of safe use in food and feed, etc. relevant to the safety assessment on our products. 
  • Learn and conduct bioinformatics analysis for protein toxin and allergen risk assessment following internal guidelines.
  • Monitor and deliver toxicity and/or animal feeding studies conducted by CROs in compliance with all safety, regulatory and GLP requirements.
  • Provide technical expertise in identifying, solving, and managing a variety of technical issues or challenges within responsible areas, and be able to optimize relevant processes to eliminate significant inefficiencies.
  • Be able to understand and communicate technical issues with stakeholders and provide expert inputs and/or prepare technical documents in response to questions from regulatory authorities.
  • Manage and prioritize multiple project responsibilities within cross functional teams for timely delivery.    
  • Work to gain recognition as a subject matter expert internally among cross-function colleagues

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills

Critical Knowledge, experience, capabilities and qualifications

  • PhD degree with 0-3 years of relevant professional experience or equivalent combination of education and experience in life sciences such as immunology, toxicology, microbiology, molecular biology or biochemistry is required.
  • Deep understanding of factors from food and feed that may attribute to adverse effects on human and animal health (i.e. toxicity, food allergy and nutrition).
  • Demonstrated proficiency of designing, conducting, interpreting and reporting scientific studies.  
  • Demonstrated proficiency of scouting, reviewing, categorizing, and summarizing scientific literature to address a technical question is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of the safety assessment paradigm for genetically modified or genome editing crops is a plus
  • Additional knowledge and experiences in bioinformatics analysis for protein toxicity or allergen is a plus.
