Purpose:

Through the sharing and application of expert knowledge and experience, you will:

  • Provide expert advice and leadership in key areas of Construction Management and Construction Safety, ensuring adequate project systems and capabilities are created and maintained to meet Syngenta requirements in these areas.
  • Ensure that construction activities use fit-for-purpose engineering solutions and meet Syngenta requirements (through close liaison with other functions HSE, PTAI, FPE, Site Engineering, Principal Engineers and key stakeholders)
  • Advice teams and develop guidance on the legal compliance requirements of construction and asset commissioning activities
  • Achieve consistent, high standards of HSE across all construction activity in the region by championing best practice, identifying and defining construction HSE standards for the use by Project Managers and their teams.
  • Monitor and continuously improve identified Construction standards.
  • Support Project Managers to define the best construction strategy and associated contract model according to the type and size of the project (selection, bid and contracting process).
  • Support project teams to implement best practice on construction, contracting strategies, contractor pre-qualification, constructability reviews, contractor management, progress reporting, defining and monitoring quality standards to be used in construction activities.
  • Support teams in the selection and implementation of appropriate QA/QC processes and commissioning in compliance with Syngenta procedures (COP, guidance…) or with local laws.
  • Develop construction capabilities of all Engineering teams in EAME based on capabilities assessment and review and performing appropriated training and regular update on norms / standard changes.
  • Coordinate monthly and annual reporting of Regional and Global construction activity reporting including HSE statistics 

Accountabilities

  • Collaboration with Engineering Leadership to develop and implement contemporary Construction safety and management requirements into the Engineering Project Process and supporting capabilities for Project Engineers and Managers
  • Work with Project Managers to shape the construction element of project scope, 
  • Ensure full integration between commissioning and start up activities and the design and construction phases of projects.
  • Visit construction sites across the region to advise the Syngenta team and contractors on construction safety and to monitor the application of good practice, offering practical solutions for safe working. These visits to be scheduled on a risked-based approach across the project portfolio.
  • Demonstrate a personal contribution to year-on-year improvement in construction safety across the region using lead indicators and KPIs.
  • Acting as a center for professionalism on construction activities – directly supporting project teams and advising/mentoring project managers (manage/support/consult model)
  • Ensure construction safety and constructability are fully considered in the early stages of projects by leading the relevant reviews on larger projects and participating in other reviews
  • Ensure Construction legal compliance is fully considered in our processes and advise Project Managers on its application
  • An active team member on major construction projects, working closely with the project manager and procurement organization in contractor bid process, selection and contracting processes.
  • In certain circumstances, the job holder may be the construction manager on a project
  • Ensuring that regional construction project HSE data is reported, compiled and analysed in an accurate and timely fashion by the various project teams. Lead construction accident and incident investigation, monitor and report the follow up of actions and communicate learning
  • Improve year after year the construction safety across EAME through the use of lead indicators and KPIs.
  • Ensure that quantities of completed work items are agreed with the Contractor.
  • Develop and maintain a Behavioral Based Safety system and capability at the Regional level, cascading to site teams as required

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in engineering science or significant practical experience
  • A minimum of 10 year of experience in a similar regulated industry
  • Fluent level in English and French
  • Extensive knowledge of the construction industry and standards in the region, including legislative requirements
  • Detailed knowledge of HSE standards on construction sites, best practice and practical strategies for achieving high HSE standards in the project environment
  • Good understanding of the different strategies and processes for selecting and engaging construction contractors, including different forms of contract
  • Extensive experience in the construction function with both strategic and hands-on dimensions
  • A demonstrated track record of direct construction management, or construction safety management, responsibility
  • True passion for Security
