Flexible working location will be considered.

 

About this Role

Syngenta’s Crop Protection Product Safety Group is committed to applying world-class science and winning innovation to offer farmers safe, cost-effective solutions that address the demands of a rapidly changing world.  We are looking for a principal or senior toxicologist to join our Human Safety Team.  This is a senior-level professional position with career growth potential.  This person will provide insight and foresight to regional and global Human Safety toxicology on technical advances, scientific findings, challenges, and their implications for Product Safety's ability to achieve success, and provide high-level toxicology inputs to various project teams and technical expert groups. This person will assume accountability for developing new active ingredients or maintaining and expanding product registrations with a primary focus on North America. He/she will represent Human Safety in individual projects working in multi-disciplinary teams to enable dossier submissions and responses to regulatory questions. This person will also represent Human Safety and Syngenta to external stakeholders, including regulatory agencies and industry-wide task forces and work groups. Additional responsibilities include contributing to the technical expert groups in their area of expertise to advance the quality of studies in compliance with regulatory guidelines and GLP requirements and providing interpreted data and advice to projects regionally and globally.

 

Essential Duties & Accountabilities:

  • Lead projects and/or represent Human Safety in multi-disciplinary product development and product life cycle management (PLCM) teams, providing expert advice with both a regional (NA) and global view to designing testing programs and strategies to create business benefit

  • Lead projects through milestones and stage gate promotions by coordinating inputs from senior scientists, fellows, and expert groups, and working towards a Human Safety toxicology position which allows critical business and project decisions to be made

  • Execute project science plan by partnering with the study placement team and providing guidance to study managers from project and regulatory perspectives

  • Determine toxicology data requirements for specific products, and understand, interpret, integrate and use results in risk/safety assessments to demonstrate product safety

  • Provide high-level technical input or resume a technical leadership, advisory, or mentoring role in a technical expert group

  • Identify and lead strategic science research projects that strengthen Syngenta’s understanding and application of toxicological science and therefore advance our testing strategies and advocacy efforts in product safety.

  • Play a proactive role in independently identifying, defining, solving, and managing key issues or challenges in toxicology

  • Act as a senior advisor on the design of new studies and testing strategies

  • Support recruitment, training, and development of Human Safety team members

  • Engage with other platforms in Product Safety and Regulatory Affairs to identify areas of improvement and enhance collaboration

  • Represent Syngenta in discussions related to the safety of Syngenta’s products with global regulatory authorities utilizing strong presentation, advocacy, and negotiating skills to advance Syngenta’s positions

  • Be an active member of the toxicology community by networking with key stakeholders in regulatory bodies, research institutes, universities, expert circles, and interest/lobby associations

  • Participate in industry-wide task forces and work groups for toxicology topics that are important to Syngenta, and use your status as an externally credible and recognized toxicology expert to advance Syngenta’s positions


Qualifications

Qualifications:

  • A PhD (in toxicology preferred), or combination of education and experience (10+ years) in a field relevant to safety assessment to support the development and maintenance of crop protection products. Work level will be adjusted based on education and experience.

  • Wide-ranging knowledge of regulatory toxicology coupled with demonstrated technical leadership and/or project leadership in toxicology

  • Project management skills preferably gained from agricultural industry, with experience in US EPA and Canada PMRA regulatory compliance

  • Experience or strong understanding of the purpose and conduct of toxicology studies in the context of risk assessment

  • Ability to gain insights and foresights of strengths/vulnerabilities and translate them to risk management strategies

  • Ability to make good technical judgements in a timely manner, work on multiple projects simultaneously, and prioritize work effectively

  • Effective written/verbal communication, organizational, and analytical skills with attention to details

  • Strong interpersonal and collaboration skills

Additional Knowledge, Skills, Traits & Abilities:

  • Interest or experience in systemic toxicology or pharmacokinetics and metabolism

  • Interest or experience to promote and advocate alternative methods in safety assessment strategies

  • Interest or experience working with human and animal risk assessor, bio/statistical analyst, and/or data science expert
