We are recruiting a Principal Process Engineer to join our Process Technology Active Ingredient (PTAI) group in Huddersfield. Huddersfield Manufacturing Centre has eight manufacturing plants making agricultural products for global distribution. As a Principal Process Engineer within PTAI, you would have the opportunity to work in a multi-discipline team supporting large scale fine / speciality chemical manufacturing on a Top Tier COMAH site.

The focus of this role will be, as Process Engineer Lead / Technical authority for multiple plants / areas onsite, to partner with production, engineering, support and other value chain colleagues to support and drive the business strategy for the relevant assets and areas including organising the technical support for operations, process optimisation / operational discipline, sustenance and major CAPEX projects (from initial feasibility studies right through to commissioning).

Day-to-day, your role could involve:

  • Leading a team of experienced and Graduate Engineers.
  • Technical support lead for operations support activities to drive the business value of the assets / process.
  • Technical authority / responsible Engineer and final sign-off where chemical engineering principles and underlying theory associated have been applied to the definition, design and operation of a wide range of unit operations (e.g. reactor design, separation, heat transfer, mixing processes and powder transfer, filtration & drying).
  • Process Safety Knowledge Owner (PSKO) for the plants of responsibility. This includes using knowledge of fire, explosion and chemical reaction hazards to assess the impact of change on critical process limits.
  • Providing scope definition and process design data for capital project and plant modifications.
  • Technical authority for process engineering within change projects and process improvements initiatives from innovation to development to implementation.
  • Acting as controlling mind and approver for commissioning of projects and modification to ensure that design intent is met and production is established safely and effectively.
  • Coaching & mentoring of Graduate Process Engineers on our IChemE accredited graduate scheme.

Qualifications

  • A candidate with a passion for Science & Technology and is proactive with their own self development and thrives in a collaborative, multi-disciplinary team.
  • Must have degree level education in chemical or process engineering, at least BEng or MEng equivalent.
  • Typically, 8 to 10+ years' experience working as a Chemical Process Engineer in a chemical manufacturing environment or related role.
  • Must be Chartered Engineer and full Member of the Institute of Chemical Engineers (MIChemE) or actively working towards this.
  • Knowledge of process risk assessment systems (e.g. HAZOP etc), and relevant HSE standards (safety instrument systems, pressure relief and DSEAR etc).

Desirable

Any one of these may make your application stand out, but are not essential, as they can be developed in the role:

  • Practical experience & theoretical knowledge in batch chemical process engineering.
  • Experience delivering continuous improvement – awareness and use of a range of LEAN / Six Sigma or other tools, techniques and an understanding of the desired mindset.
  • As a global company, having the ability to speak foreign languages is a benefit – especially French, German and Chinese (Mandarin).
