Job description

Role purpose

  • Provide the technical support of plant disease diagnosis, especially sample processing and plant inoculation
  • Maintain microbial cultures for disease diagnosis and breeding trait development
  • Perform disease resistant trait development in greenhouse and growth chamber
  • Support other R&D activity in Pathology and Breeding team as assigned

Accountabilities

  • Conduct plant assay tests independently
  • Maintain plant pathogen collections for plant disease diagnosis and trait development
  • Perform evaluation of disease sensitivity
  • Work with the Breeding Team to identify and evaluate disease resistant
  • Must be able to work with minimum supervision in the laboratory
  • Work collaboratively on a regular basis with other R&D and Operation team members
  • Follow compliance with laws and regulations of plant pests (USDA-APHIS, CDFA, County), laboratory safety, and chemical use
  • Utilize all good hygiene/sanitation practices employed in the lab and greenhouse
  • Track consumable inventory required for activities and submit purchase request to Trial Support Administrator
  • Maintain clean laboratory work areas and supplies, including plastic consumables such as pipette tips and petri dishes, and laboratory equipment.
  • Maintain detailed records as required and requested
  • Support preventative maintenance and annual lab equipment calibration.
  • Ability to work with other research associates for disease diagnosis and trait development.
  • Enjoy new challenges and learn new techniques as needed.

Qualifications

Critical knowledge

  • B.S. degree or equivalent in Biology or Agriculture
  • Relevant knowledge of plant pathology, microbiology, plant science, and horticulture.

Critical experience

  • At least 1 years of work experience working in biological laboratory and greenhouse.
  • Computer literate with proficiency in Microsoft Office.

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

  • Ability to translate diagnosis results and technical information
  • Excellent communication skills (written/verbal)
