This role is a laboratory-based position to explore physical chemical phenomena to support the development of new formulated products.  Working as part of a team of chemists and engineers, you will plan and carry out experimental programmes to deliver the underlying science of product performance.  You will use your knowledge of physical chemistry, excellent practical laboratory skills and an ability to generate high quality data to deliver this key knowledge.  A familiarity with a range of solid-state and physical characterisation analysis methods would be an advantage, but is not essential as training in appropriate instrumentation will be provided.

You will be accountable for

  • Planning and carrying out laboratory work to meet project targets and timescales as agreed with your manager in order to increase understanding & thereby generate product or process improvements.
  • Determining the best method(s) and methodology, in consultation with your Manager, to investigate complex system behaviour.
  • Independently progressing work plans with minimal supervision.
  • Summarising and processing data; interpreting results to deliver value-adding insight to projects.
  • Preparing appropriate sections of technical reports to provide a clear record of the results and conclusions from laboratory work.
  • Carrying out literature searches and searches of computerised databases in order to assist in the design of experimental work programmes.
  • Compliance with local Health Safety & Environment systems and procedures. 

Essential Knowledge & Experience

  • Strong laboratory skills: able to design and carry out experiments with minimal supervision.
  • Solid understanding of physical chemistry.
  • Previous experience of analysing and interpreting results
  • Skilled at precise data collection, manipulation and presentation.
  • Proficient in the use of Windows operating system and Microsoft Office.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong organisational and interpersonal skills

Preferred Knowledge and Experience

  • An understanding of the fundamental behaviour of crystallising or colloidal systems. 
  • Experience in the mathematical modelling software packages, with some programming experience.

Educations/Qualifications

  • Degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a Physical Science
