Role Purpose

Responsible for the end to end delivery of specific barley field nursery activities. Including planning, seed preparation, MINT compliance, drilling, scoring, harvesting, drying and processing

Accountabilities

Operations

  • In collaboration with the Breeders and the Operations Manager, coordinate and contribute to the planning, seed preparation, MINT compliance, drilling, scoring, harvesting, drying and processing of early stage barley breeding nurseries.
  • Prepare detailed field plans for the specific barley breeding nurseries
  • Liaise with Field Logistics team to ensure that fields for breeding nurseries are prepared for drilling
  • Ensure that field assessments and data collection are carried out in line with protocols
  • Management of all nurseries seed storage ensuring inventory lists are kept up to date with MINT compliance.

HSE & Quality Management

  • To ensure all areas of accountability are executed in accordance with local work instructions, risk assessments and all relevant health and safety requirements
  • To ensure documentation relating to the areas of accountability are reviewed and updated
  • Support HSE initiatives and improvement plan on site

 


Qualifications

Skills, Knowledge & Experience

  • Previous experience of working in the agricultural or breeding sector
  • A good understanding of plant genetics or breeding
  • Experience of working with tight and changing deadlines and multiple priorities
  • Proactive approach to dealing with problems and looking for innovative solutions
  • Good planning and organising skills and attention to detail
  • Practical approach to work (indoor and outdoor work required)
  • Ability to work with both commercially focused and operationally based stakeholders
  • A Degree or HND in Agricultural or Biological science or relevant experience in a plant breeding environment is preferred

Critical success factors Key challenges

  • All field activities completed at optimum times
  • Establish effective lines of communication with Barley breeders and Operations Manager
  • Demonstrate flexibility with tasks ranging from administrative through to practical work outdoors
  • Managing conflicting demands between the Winter and Spring breeding without sacrificing quality

Additional information

  • Requirement to be able to work effectively in a range of environments (e.g. field, polytunnels, laboratory, office etc.)
  • The role requires variable working hours (including weekend/evening work during critical business periods)
  • Full and valid driving licence is preferred
