The North America Seeds Nursery Head will be responsible for leading the operational and strategic activities of our seed nurseries across North America. This role is pivotal in ensuring the production of high-quality seeds for our breeding and research programs. The successful candidate will have a robust background in horticulture, agronomy, or a related agricultural science, with a strong focus on nursery operations and management.

Accountabilities:

  • Oversee the management and operation of seed nurseries, ensuring the production of high-quality seeds that meet the needs of breeding and research programs.
  • Develop and implement nursery production schedules, protocols, and procedures to optimize efficiency, quality, and genetic purity.
  • Lead a team of nursery staff, including managers, agronomists, technicians, and seasonal workers, fostering a culture of safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
  • Collaborate with breeding, genetics, and product development teams to align nursery operations with program goals and timelines.
  • Manage the introduction and evaluation of new technologies and cultivation practices to enhance nursery productivity and sustainability.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulatory, environmental, and stewardship standards pertaining to seed production and Phyto sanitation.
  • Coordinate with supply chain and logistics teams to ensure timely and secure delivery of seeds to breeding stations, trial sites, and other destinations.
  • Analyze and report on nursery performance metrics, making data-driven recommendations for operational enhancements.
  • Develop and manage the nursery budget, including capital investments, operating expenses, and resource allocation.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with external partners, suppliers, and industry organizations to stay informed of advancements in nursery management.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Horticulture, Agronomy, Plant Science, or a related field; Master’s degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in nursery operations or seed production, with at least 3 years in a leadership role.
  • In-depth knowledge of plant propagation, growth requirements, and seed production techniques.
  • Proven track record of implementing best practices in nursery management and crop production.
  • Strong leadership and team management skills, with the ability to mentor and develop staff.
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and project management abilities.
  • Proficient in the use of agricultural technology, data management systems, and relevant software.
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage with diverse audiences.
  • Willingness to travel as needed to visit nursery sites, attend conferences, and engage with industry partners.
