Role Purpose
The Licensing Manager- Seeds, Research & Development  is based in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina. The primary responsibilities of the role are to plan, lead and execute the diligence and agreement negotiation actions necessary to establish R&D and commercial level licenses and collaborations between Syngenta and public and private entities. The incumbent will be skilled in the art of defining and validating terms leading to successful partnerships and be capable of drafting and negotiating agreements, from term sheet to executed contract.
 

Accountabilities:

  • Work with the Seeds R&D Partnerships and Open Innovation team and Seeds R&D leadership to shape and execute the external collaboration strategy.
  • Lead deal teams to develop partnering strategies and business terms aligned to the Seeds R&D strategy.
  • Lead negotiations, liaising with Seeds R&D, legal and IP to establish win-win partnerships aligned with the Seeds R&D and business strategy.
  • Key licensing contact for Seeds R&D based in RTP.

Qualifications

Knowledge, experience & capabilities

  • Academic education in sciences or similar education
  • Basic knowledge and understanding of the technologies underpinning Seeds R&D research (GM, GE, breeding, data analytics, etc) 
  • Understanding of needs and processes involved in developing deals and structuring and implementing agreements with academics, start-ups, and commercial entities
  • Good collaborative skills and the ability to work with Legal and IP and business partners

Critical experience

  • Ability to translate internal research/business needs into meaningful and relevant contract terms
  • Experienced negotiator
  • Effective relationship management
  • Strong interfacing and networking abilities both internally and externally
  • Understanding of various deal structures and capable to propose, draft and negotiate appropriate terms in collaboration with Legal and IP
  • Open communicator
  • Capability to foresee what is best for Syngenta and the third party

Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities

  • Professional appearance vis-à-vis third parties, projects self-confidence
  • Excellent organizer, coordinator and networker internally and externally
  • Capable of independent working
  • Drive collaboration negotiation process to receive best terms for Syngenta
  • Capable to propose collaboration scope and lead or participate in a negotiation team with members from legal, IP, R&D and/or business
  • Capable to understand agreements and IP related matters
  • Basic understanding of financial terms
