Role Purpose:

  • To provide strategic direction for occupational and behavioral safety ensuring that the HSE management system is current, and the company’s HSE leadership aims are met
  • To provide expert safety advice so as to reduce the likelihood that employees will suffer injuries as a consequence of working for Syngenta
  • To build the competence of Syngenta safety professionals in the deployment of the HSE Management System.
  • To provide leadership for the development of HSE capability
  • To review Syngenta safety performance, identify issues and then develop specific improvement proposals.

Accountabilities:

  • To provide functional leadership to the occupational and behavioral safety function within Syngenta.
  • To manage the HSE functional capability strategy and the HSE capability development programs.
  • Develop and establish business occupational safety policies, elements, and solutions to enable the business to manage its responsibilities.
  • To establish behavioral safety programs and drive their delivery to enable the business to make a step change in the Syngenta safety performance.
  • Promote occupational and behavioral safety within the business to support management with their accountability for the safety of their activities.
  • To ensure that the safety professionals within Syngenta can deliver their roles by developing and providing specialist safety training.
  • To critically review incidents and provide expertise for incident investigation and root cause analysis and manage an effective incident learning process. Where needed, lead/ advise investigations of incidents with high actual or potential severity.
  • To participate in the Syngenta HSE management system audit program to ensure that it meets the needs of occupational safety to assess safety compliance and the effectiveness of HSE management systems.
  • Establish and maintain good working relationships with relevant international agencies.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in engineering or chemistry (or similar qualification) or professional equivalent
  • Occupational Safety qualification (e.g. NEBOSH)
  • A minimum of 15 years’ experience in manufacturing operations, engineering projects or chemical process development.
  • A minimum of 10 years’ experience in a safety or process safety role within a high hazard chemical manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated understanding of core safety topics including: management of change, fire and explosion hazards, chemical reaction hazards, risks assessment, permit to work, working at height, confined space entry, machine safety, safety instrumented systems, pressure systems, primary and secondary containment, local extraction ventilation, automation, emergency management, personal protective equipment, incident classification, incident investigation, root cause analysis, auditing and shared learning.
  • Broad understanding of general HSE regulatory requirements around the world in different types of facility. Able to quickly assimilate and apply new technical and regulatory knowledge.
  • Proven knowledge in auditing to enable identification of strengths and weaknesses in HSE management and compliance systems.
  • Proficient in English, essential. Additional foreign language skills, preferred.
