Role Purpose

At Syngenta, we are working to build the most collaborative and trusted team in agriculture that provides leading seeds and crop protection innovations to help farmers grow their best crop.  We are currently seeking a Field Biologist for the Crop Protection Development team.  You will be Responsible for planning, implementation and reporting of biological efficacy field studies and represent the company while actively communicating with University, Government and private researchers. You will generate value added Syngenta and competitor product knowledge including data summaries, technical presentations, and regulatory submission documents.

This is a 12 month fixed-term contract that is covering a family leave, and this role will be based at our research facility in Plattsville, ON.

What will you do:

  • Leads development of biological data for specific products, acting as a technical resource for these products;
  • Focus on efficacy field studies, including statistical design/analysis.
  • Coordinates studies to satisfy regulatory and marketing objectives.
  • Prepares written and verbal reports including trial abstracts, scientific data summaries and Value submissions;
  • Recruits, trains and supervises temporary assistants to maximize efficiency and ensure health and safety practices are followed.
  • Establish and maintain strong and productive professional relationships with University, Government and private industry research and extension personnel in the territory.
  • Maintains capital equipment and supports farm operations
  • Conducts all role requirements in compliance with Syngenta and government health and safety policies.

Qualifications

You are someone with:

  • Minimum of 3 seasons of experience in field research and development
  • Completion of an applied advanced agricultural science degree (M.Sc. or PhD preferred)
  • Training or experience in applied pathology, applied entomology or herbicide is highly desired (For example, knowledge of efficacy field trial methodology, knowledge of plant diseases and insect pests, technical knowledge of fungicide and insecticide modes of action)
  • Knowledge of field crop production systems including detailed knowledge of crop protection and accepted agronomic practices.
  • Knowledge of the Canadian regulatory process for submission of value data following current PMRA guidelines
  • Operating farm and research field equipment (tractors, planters, cultivators, combines, mowers, rototillers, sprayers etc.) AZ or AR license is an asset
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills are required.  This role is part of a multi-disciplinary team and requires daily collaboration with peers locally and across geographies
  • Experience with digital ag research tools is desired (ie. digital capture of field assessments, remote sensing technologies, and data science)
  • Must be comfortable standing or walking, bending, kneeling, or working in awkward positions and lifting, carrying, pushing, or pulling medium to heavy weight materials.
  • Must be comfortable working indoors and outdoors in inclement environments, both high & low temperatures
  • Handling and use of chemical test substances with full personal protective equipment including various respirators
