About this opportunity:

Syngenta Product Safety provide environmental fate and exposure expertise to support sustainable agricultural practices, safe use, development and registration of new and existing active ingredients and crop protection products.

Our environmental fate field studies team provides specialist technical expertise and advice to design, and manage the implementation of studies, in particular groundwater monitoring studies, leaching studies, terrestrial field dissipation studies, treated seed dust/volatility studies, and supporting analytical chemistry studies.

We are currently recruiting to fill a role as technical specialist within this team, based in Jealott’s Hill, Berkshire, UK, with hybrid working opportunities.

In this role you will:

  • Design environmental fate studies at the field, national or European scale to meet known or anticipated regulatory requirements.
  • Work with and/or supervise Contract Research Organisations (CROs) to deliver environmental fate study projects across Europe to a high standard, meeting business/external requirements for both delivery timelines and technical quality.
  • Critically review study outputs, and where necessary analyse/interpret data.
  • Identify and advise the business on required adaptations of the study design, and/or initiation of supplementary studies.
  • Attend multi-disciplinary project meetings and communicate and receive feedback to/from technical peers and other parts of the business.
  • Represent the Company in discussions/communications with external regulatory agencies to find mutually acceptable solutions to queries over assessment/investigation procedures and interpretation of findings.

There will also be opportunities to:

  • Develop knowledge and skills in related areas (e.g. ecotoxicology, environmental fate modelling, risk assessment of crop protection products), through training courses, internal knowledge sharing and/or external conference attendance.
  • Develop and implement enhanced processes, techniques and practices in the delivery of our field studies.
  • Be involved in bespoke scientific research projects that allow Syngenta to adapt to meet emerging issues related to environmental fate.

Qualifications

  • A degree in a relevant science discipline such as environmental science, chemistry, geology, biology, water science or similar.
  • A higher degree (MSc or PhD is desirable), or equivalent post-graduate experience in a discipline relating to environmental fate field science.

Essential skills:

  • Technical knowledge of one or more of the environmental fate field study types we perform.
  • Organisational ability to plan/manage/lead several different on-going studies/tasks simultaneously.
  • Ability to work in partnership with specialist CROs.
  • Ability to make pragmatic judgements on study design/delivery to achieve business aims.
  • Ability to analyse and synthesize multiple lines of technical data and communicate the implications to both specialists and non-specialists.
  • Networking and relationship building skills, including the ability to operate across multicultural environments.

Essential experience:

  • Design and implementation of field studies to assess the environmental fate of crop protection products, or other organic compounds.
  • Compilation of data and preparation of interpretative reports from the above.

Desirable:

  • Preparation of submissions to fulfil regulatory requirements, and interaction with regulators to gain their acceptance.
  • Procurement and supervision of CROs (or equivalent organization).
  • Knowledge/experience in hydrogeology/groundwater investigations, and contaminant transport in soil, air, and/or water.
  • Knowledge/experience with analytical techniques for the chemical analysis of organic compounds
  • Experience of working according to GLP (Good Laboratory Practice).
  • Knowledge of EU legislation and regulations relevant to the registration of crop protection products.
  • Project management skills, including; task planning, programme management and budget tracking.
