The primary responsibility of the Enabling Technologies Portfolio Manager role is working with the Enabling Technologies Portfolio Team (ETPT), Decision Science Enabling Technologies Portfolio Teams (DSET) and Seeds R&D functions on defining and implementing the right technology strategies to drive performance objectives.

The role works across functions in Seeds R&D, partnering in aligning, implementing, and achieving approved strategies and goals for optimizing portfolio resourcing, decisions, and execution. 

The Enabling Technologies Portfolio Manager enables and oversees the effectiveness of the Seeds R&D technology portfolios against the technology landscape and business strategy. The role works jointly with senior leadership on the overall strategy and objectives within the assigned portfolio.

Accountabilities 

  • Be accountable for the DSET and ETPT Seeds Development Portfolio Cycle (PDC) – managing communication, tracking, templates, timelines, reporting, analysis, etc. 
  • Guide benefit mapping, manage prioritization processes, partner in assessing effectiveness of resourcing strategies, enable and support risk management practices and facilitate effective decision management
  • Evaluate portfolio resource requests and provide leadership with strategic alignment of: benefit, delivery timing, project risks, and approval recommendations 
  • Track against technology roadmaps to understand when technologies will transition to scaled implementation impacting a connected product portfolio in R&D, and ensure effective communication and resource planning is occurring between governing portfolio teams
  • Make recommendations to the relevant Enabling Technology Portfolio Board (i.e., ETPT or DSET) and/or other portfolio teams regarding technology products and their value to the organization to enable cross-portfolio decision making
  • Work with Seeds R&D portfolio functions and portfolio teams to enable portfolio health reporting to demonstrate effective decision making, resourcing strategies, efficient delivery and implementation of technology 
  • Work with the R&D portfolio functions to report on portfolio health within technology Portfolio Teams, with ongoing visibility into how the technology portfolios are progressing toward meeting business objectives and strategic goals
  • Own the coordination between functional portfolio managers in Seeds Development – and operate as a single point of contact for cross-functional portfolio questions
  • Facilitate alignment of the Seeds Development pipelines and roadmaps to 5-year planning and 15-year business strategy
  • Develop a strong and comprehensive knowledge of Seeds R&D portfolio, including a working knowledge of Syngenta crop markets, product pipelines, long-term planning, product data standards, quality metrics and systems/tools
  • Support the development of target metrics and assist in implementing these KPIs to drive performance improvements
  • Facilitate the creation and maintenance of a portfolio roadmap as an effective tool to communicate the larger picture to the rest of the enterprise, and identify possible interdependencies with other workstreams
  • Open up new thinking, develop new perspectives and challenge pre-existing assumptions and beliefs 
  • As needed, provide additional ad hoc support to the Portfolio & Transformation organization

Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree
  • 5+ years of portfolio management, product lifecycle management / business process experience, product development or similar experience
  • 5+ years of experience in working on large-scale, complex, global change/transformation portfolios, preferably in an agile capacity, or in other project management roles
  • Experience with a bi-model delivery environment (i.e. both waterfall and agile methodologies), and understanding how to operate agile portfolios within this environment
  • Experienced in bridging the gap between technical and business stakeholders, driving both with a relentless focus on end customer value
  • Multidisciplinary work experience in seeds business, pharma and/or biotechnology industries
  • Track record of project delivery success that should include: System Implementation / Integration, cost savings, process improvement 
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office programs including Project, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; Power BI, Tableau, Smartsheet, SAP experience 

Preferred: 

  • SAFe SPC and/or Implementing SAFe certification 
  • Knowledgeable in design change control to ensure a tight integration with the PLM process design flow 
  • Experience applying mathematical modelling, optimization, simulation, and data analysis to solve real-world problems. Research experience also qualifies.
  • Functional knowledge of research, product innovation, germplasm development, field operations and change request management 
  • Experience in supply chain modelling and optimization, combinatorial optimization, and/or resource allocation algorithm development 
  • Knowledge in plant breeding process
