ROLE PURPOSE

  • Breeder helps to develop a range of new varieties for strategic segments identified by crop Operational Unit in collaboration with a senior Breeder.
  • Breeder is responsible for designing and executing breeding or technology projects by means of research, resulting in improvements and innovations of Syngenta crop Portfolio within the framework of product profile specifications.
  • Breeder can be responsible of specific parts of several breeding programs like MAIC nurseries, Genomic selections, Germplasm management, specific global nurseries or other specific projects. 
  • Breeder to use the most effective breeding methods and take advantage of the latest technology tools (DH, SSD, molecular markers etc.) to accelerate the progress of developing successful commercial varieties. 
  • Have to work with special tools like Spirit, PMD, Ez-capture and FADA for smooth functioning of Breeding programs. 

ACCOUNTABILITIES:

  • Develop an innovative and commercially successful product portfolio of crop varieties in line with market requests and business planning. Develop a basic understanding of target market and competition.
  • Assure innovation by the identification of new trait or trait combination opportunities (input & output traits) introduced into breeding populations and product pipeline.
  • Plan breeding projects according to program priorities defined in collaboration with crop Operational Unit. 
  • Secure efficient facility/operational support for the successful implementation of projects.
  • Implement new – and apply supporting technologies in breeding program like Germplasm management, Genomic selections, DVD, etc.
  • Data driven Hybrid selection (Trial design, Data collection and analysis) in the early stage of the trial (PLC 3 & 4). Work closely with Market segmentation team and Product development team for the late stage of testing for the prototype.
  • Organize transfer of products (PLC5 to PLC6) to production & marketing department
  • Scouting new technologies/opportunities/germplasm
  • Create and assist in development of IP position (PVP)
  • Establish good relationships with Biological operations
  • Manage the breeding team (assistant, workers).
     

Qualifications

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Critical Knowledge:

  • PhD in Genetics and plant breeding.
  • Good understanding of new product/process implementation in commercial environment
  • Basic knowledge in pathology, plant physiology, entomology, crop management, experimental design and statistics, molecular markers, database management.
  • Fluent in English
  • Project and People Management skills
  • Knowledge in trial design and statistical data analysis

  • The ability to work with multi-cultural, multi-functional and multi-regional teams.
  • Ability to work independently but also as part of a team.
  • Ability to function within a matrix organization requiring the ability to make common sense decision in an environment of change and ambiguous direction.
  • Good communicator within academic as well as business environment
  • Keen eye for innovations and persistence in developing the innovation into a commercial product having the potential to protect with a patent.
  • Plan and coordinate breeding nurseries activities in order to deliver pipeline

  • Ability to develop and lead independent crop breeding projects within critical time frame with while having the technical ability and skills to manage and function with breeding team.
