Job description

Responsibilities:

The Biological Operations Specialist will be responsible for proper execution of all field and tunnel activities, understands expectations and the needs of the requestor, works autonomously and takes responsibility for correct execution of activities which are delegated to him/her. He/she will functionally lead others in getting activities done in an optimal way. All activities in good collaboration with Crop Management Lead and BO Team Lead.

  • Execute/coordinate mechanical soil preparation (implement optimal machine settings) and crop maintenance, both in the Open Field and Tunnels.
  • Execute/coordinate plant protection works (spraying) based on the instructions of the plant protection consultant, both in the open field and in Tunnel cultivation (fertilization, irrigation, weeding, …).
  • Harvesting and data collection
  • Application of fertilizer with a mechanical fertilizer spreader based on the nutrient supply plan
  • Coordination of activities by Syngenta- and 3rd P.-labor in the field during planting, sowing and crop handling work based under the guidance of the Crop Management Lead. The Biological Operations Specialist secures that work activities are done according the requested quality standards and checks the performance after completion.
  • Proactively seek for opportunities for improvements in the operational process
  • The Specialist will be ‘on-call’ according to the weekend duty schedule
  • Secures optimal housekeeping (workplace/machinery to remain tidy/organized)
  • Executes last-minute HSE-assessments before an action is done/machine is used (filters, instruments, safety features). In case of non-conformity, report it to the person in charge of maintenance.
  • Use of occupational safety personal protective equipment prescribed for specific work.
  • Immediate registration of plant protection work carried out by him in the spray log.
  • Use of machinery safety devices.
  • Immediate report scouted pests/diseases to the appropriate person.
  • Perform any other task necessary for the success of the trials.
  • Pro-active HSEQ-approach, monitoring shortcomings and making recommendations to the Crop Management Lead. Near-misses and accidents are immediately reported to the appropriate personnel (Crop Management Lead, BO Team Lead, HSEQ-manager). The requirements of of ISO:9001 are followed.

Qualifications

Qualifications and critical knowledge: 

  • Technical knowledge on the field of specialization: Operation of agricultural machinery (i.e. tractor, machinery, crop protection application)
  • Knowledge on crop cultivation and related activities, installing irrigation systems
  • Agricultural education or agricultural work experience
  • Able to make decisions within own work area
  • Able to functionally lead others
  • Team player
  • Accurate way of working
  • Good communication skills
  • Crop protection certificate (Green book) is an advantage
  • Basic GPS Knowledge is an advantage
  • Forklift driving license is an advantage
