The North America Applied Field Data Scientist (NA-AFDS) is responsible for the review and optimization of trialing and operational resources improving delivery of commercial launches in the NA Seeds Development organization reporting through the Applied Genetics Organization. The NA-AFDS will support market segment teams of corn, soybean, hybrid wheat organizations by 1) conducting reviews and power analysis of current trialing footprints across crops and market segments and 2) review and challenge phenotypic data collection protocols and proof of concepts (POCs) to improve the data collection and quality of key traits. The NA-AFDS collaborates with other Applied Genetics Scientist, Discovery Breeding, Data Analytics Scientists, and Operational Research Teams to implement new data analytics, trialing designs and phenotyping techniques to continue to drive speed and quality of commercial launches.

Accountabilities

  • Work as a member of the North America Applied Genetics Team, contributing to the delivery of corn, soy, and hybrid wheat product development pipelines, supporting the accelerated rate of genetic gain by manipulating the stage plan, trialing, and operational data collection protocols
  • Suggest improvements needed to data quality, and/or protocols to drive early and late-stage advancement with operational research and applied genetics teams
  • Assist in providing Applied Genetic Scientist, Trialing and Operational Researchers recommendations based on data analysis to improve phenotypic assessments and protocols
  • Assess improvements in accuracy, repeatability and quality deployed by trialing, operations, and market segments to improve trial and data collection of opportunistic traits. Provide analysis of (proof of concepts) POCs to scale up or discontinue based on analytical recommendations and analysis
  • Evaluate and recommend key performance indicators (KPIs) to track trialing and operational improvements on a yearly basis. Assist in the implementation of the above-mentioned results to allow hand-off to production environments for AGS scientists, trialing and operations and other teams supporting the pipeline to track progress
  • Access and combine multiple and disparate data sources and types for quality-control (DQC), standardization, and preparation for analysis
  • Perform complex analysis, simulation, and/or mathematical modeling using large and diverse datasets to uncover underlying trends, patterns, data relations cost saving opportunities, and operational efficiency gains, using a combination of mostly existing analytical software but also newly developed methods or scripts
  • Create and maintain visualizations and/or interactive dashboards of data connections, analysis, and results to enable timely, accurate, and effective communication of pipeline progress and risks
  • Create reports and presentations that effectively summarize the analytical process, results, conclusions, risks, and recommendations for implementation, operational improvements, and/or securing funding
  • Effectively communicate data analysis, results, conclusions, and recommendations to a broad audience of technical and non-technical shareholders and stakeholders, across functions
  • Work closely with other Data Scientists, Trialing/Operations Leads, and Senior Data Scientists within the team, and actively seek involvement from different cross-functional teams and stakeholder participation to identify challenges/gaps, understand analytical needs, and deliver tailored, impactful solutions.

Qualifications

PLEASE NOTE:  candidates must already be in the United States and not require visa sponsorship.

 

Required:

  • Master’s or Ph.D. degree in Agriculture, Agronomy, Plant Science, Plant Breeding, Biostatistics, Computational Biology, Statistics, Genetics, Data Science, or a related field
  • Basic knowledge of corn, wheat and/or soy germplasm, diversity, and management
  • Familiarity with crops, plant science, plant breeding, statistics and experimental design, genetics, or other related disciplines
  • 3+ years of hands-on experience in biological data analysis from at least two data types (phenotypic, environmental, geo-spatial, molecular etc.), with a proven track record of leveraging results to drive significant impact
  • Experience with one or more tools for statistical data analysis, data summarization, and graphing. Familiarity and some experience with at least one programming language (R, SQL, and/or Python)
  • Familiarity with and preferably experience with at least one data visualization tool (RShiny, Tableau, Power BI, SAS-based or similar)
  • Ability to independently run models/simulations and draw conclusions based on results
  • Experience with high throughput, large scale data analysis methods, quality control, and routines
  • Demonstrated experience and skills in manipulating and cleaning large datasets
  • Proven ability to work in a team environment
