AI Engineer

  1. Analytics & Data Sciences
  2. Durham, NC
  3. Syngenta Seeds

Job description

At Syngenta, we believe every employee has a role to play in safely feeding the world and taking care of our planet. To support that challenge, we are currently seeking an AI Engineer. As an AI Engineer at Syngenta, you will design and build goal‑driven AI agents that enable our crop‑genetics teams to query, analyze, and act on structured scientific and farm data via natural-language instructions.

Duties:

  • Architect and orchestrate agentic processes using frameworks like LangGraph: modeling thoughts, actions, observations, tool chaining, MCP protocol, and memory/state.
  • Build integrations with data tools (SQL stores, domain-specific repositories) to be called by agents.
  • Prepare, fine-tune, and evaluate transformer models on both language and sequence datasets.
  • Design data preparation pipelines that include cleaning, structuring, deduplication, and annotation best practices.
  • Implement AI/ML pipelines: fine-tuning, metric evaluation, drift detection, iterative improvement, secure deployment.
  • Ensure production readiness with testing, CI/CD, monitoring, and cloud-native or serverless deployment architectures.
  • Collaborate with scientists to convert domain requirements into agent behaviors—experiment planning, report generation, and decision workflows.

Company Description

Syngenta Seeds is one of the world’s largest developers and producers of seed for farmers, commercial growers, retailers and small seed companies. Syngenta seeds improve the quality and yields of crops. High-quality seeds ensure better and more productive crops, which is why farmers invest in them. Advanced seeds help mitigate risks such as disease and drought and allow farmers to grow food using less land, less water and fewer inputs.

Syngenta Seeds brings farmers more vigorous, stronger, resistant plants, including innovative hybrid varieties and biotech crops that can thrive even in challenging growing conditions.

Syngenta Seeds is headquartered in the United States.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 5+ years of software development experience and/or machine learning engineering/research.
  • Strong foundation in AI/ML and deep learning, especially transformer architectures and training methods.
  • Hands-on experience fine-tuning transformer models with attention to evaluation metrics and cost‑aware resource use.
  • Experience designing or extending agentic systems, including planning workflows and tool integration.
  • Proficiency in Python, React, TypeScript, SQL, APIs, and agent-tool integrations.
  • Experience with cloud services/serverless architectures for deploying models and orchestrating back-end pipelines.
  • Good knowledge of engineering best practices, such as automated testing, version control, reproducible environments, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Clear communicator—can produce readable code, thorough documentation, and coherent design rationale.

Preferred:

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Computer Science or a relevant STEM field.
  • Relevant peer-reviewed publications or open-source contributions.
  • Front-end experience with React and TypeScript.
  • Familiarity with biological sequence modeling and evaluation metrics.
